The Latest Street Fighter Film Has Found Its Director

As we all know, Legendary Entertainment recently acquired the TV and film rights for Street Fighter, but it looks like this company has started to make progress in working on a new film. According to the latest reports, Danny and Michael Philippou are in final negotiations to direct a new Street Fighter film.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Legendary is in talks with the Australian pair of twins, but not much has been revealed. However, Legendary is reportedly also in talks with several writers. The Phillipou brothers have just completed their directorial debut, Talk to Me.

A24 acquired the film's North American broadcast rights last January, after a fierce haggling process. The film premiered at Sundance to very positive reviews, and will premiere July 28 to general audiences. Before making their debut with Talk to Me, these twins from Australia were the popular YouTubers behind the RackaRacka channel. The channel has over 6 million followers and features horror comedy videos.

Legendary is the company behind successful films such as Godzilla vs Kong and Dune. The previous successful Legendary films, the acclaimed direction of the Philipou brothers, and the huge number of Street Fighter fans will no doubt raise expectations for the upcoming Street Fighter film. Video game adaptations are nothing new for the studio, as Legendary has produced box office hits such as Detective Pikachu and Warcraft.

Details about the upcoming film are still scarce. However, Legendary will be collaborating directly with Street Fighter game developer Capcom on this project, who will also act as co-producer. While no casting or production schedule has been reported yet, it appears Legendary is moving quickly with the film. However, that's not the only medium Street Fighter is currently in development with, as Legendary acquired not only the franchise's film rights, but also the television rights. While no TV series has been announced yet, it seems natural that the studio will also adapt the franchise for the small screen.

As a fighting and arcade video game series developed and published by Capcom and created by Takashi Nishiyama and Hiroshi Matsumoto, Street Fighter is one of the most famous and popular video games of all time. The first game was released in 1987, and has since lit up arcades and homes many times over since then with a franchise that spawned a wide variety of spin-offs and crossovers, as well as all kinds of animated films, series, comics, and just about everything else. that you can imagine such a popular property would and should produce.

Famous for a variety of different fighters, including names like Ryu, Ken, Chung-Li, Major Guile, Zangief, M. Bison, and many more, there are now five games in the main Street Fighter video game series, with Street Fighter II in 1991 managed to maintain the formula and remains a fond memory for video game fans everywhere. The sixth in the series, Street Fighter 6, will land on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on June 2 this year.
